A lively lion dance and an international band performance set the stage for the World Oceans Day special edition of the 2026 APEC Consular Nature Shenzhen Tour, an event aimed at exploring Shenzhen’s marine culture, technological innovation and ecological achievements.
Held June 6, the event welcomed Ivan Rymar, vice consul of the Russian Consulate General in Guangzhou, alongside international students and representatives from foreign-invested firms in Shenzhen. The delegation’s first stop was the Eye of the Greater Bay Area, where more than 30 marine institutions, public welfare organizations and industry stakeholders presented interactive exhibits. The participation of Hong Kong’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department added a cross-border perspective, underscoring growing exchanges in marine culture between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
The marine industry exhibition offered a glimpse into Shenzhen’s growing strength in ocean technology. Local companies displayed a range of cutting-edge products, including intelligent marine robots and smart water rescue vessels, transforming the venue into a showcase for marine innovation.
Cheng Zhangmin, deputy director-general of the Shenzhen Municipal Ocean Development Bureau, said the World Oceans Day activities were designed to help the public engage with different aspects of the marine sector, while gaining a deeper appreciation of Shenzhen’s maritime culture.

During a seminar session, Rymar joined marine planning experts and student representatives to exchange views on topics including the construction of the Urban Index of Shenzhen and collaborative blue economy development under the APEC framework.
In the afternoon, the delegation embarked on the “Shenzhen from the Sea” cruise, passing iconic landmarks such as the Sea World Culture and Arts Center, the Shenzhen Bay Bridge, the China Resources Headquarters Building, the Ping An Finance Centre and the Futian Mangrove Ecological Park. The route offered a vivid illustration of Shenzhen’s transformation from a fishing village into a global metropolis and highlighted the city’s defining qualities of innovation, livability, beauty, resilience, civility and intelligence.
The group later visited a marine culture exhibition, where guides introduced Shenzhen’s efforts to enhance marine ecological value, promote ocean literacy and implement ecological restoration projects. The exhibition showcased the city’s ongoing efforts to balance urban development with environmental protection and preserve its coastal ecosystems.
Rymar spoke highly of the event and reflected on Shenzhen’s remarkable development. Having first visited the city many years ago, he said the pace of change and progress he has witnessed today is striking.
